sarge525 > Former B-24 Liberator bomber navigator George Temple, 44th Bombardment Group, Ploesti bombing raid vet, Aug 1st, 1943. Due to battle damage to his plane, he had to bail out over enemy territory and was taken prisoner. When the hospital in which he was being treated for a broken ankle (from the parachute landing) was accidentally bombed by Americans, he escaped through the rubble, and in a few days, with two other wounded American PW's, he made it back to Allied lines in Italy. He later attended British escape and evasion training, after which he returned Stateside and taught E & E to American flyers. Taken Aug 1st, 2007, Lincoln, Nebraska.

sarge525 > George Manawa. He didn't think I could pronounce his Indian name of Ma-na-ha-way. George was just beginning to be able to speak enough Japanese to get by in town when he had to go to Da Nang.
8-6-07 George called today. It was great being able to hear my friend's voice again and reminisce a bit about our adventure together--over there. Thank you George, very much.

sarge525 > Nov 13th, 1942, Alconbury, England. Col Edward J. "Ted" Timberlake (in left rear of jeep), first commander of the 93rd Bombardment Group, the first group of B-24 Liberator bombers to cross the Atlantic to join the air war in Europe and North Africa, welcomes England's King George VI (right rear of jeep) to the U.S. airbase at Alconbury. The King inspected the B-24 seen in the background, "Teggie Ann," which was flown later on the famous Ploesti raid by the 376th Bombardment Group commander Col K.K. Compton, a former squadron commander in the 93rd. From the front page of "The Liberator," the group's newsletter, founded and printed by the 93rd's public information officer, (then) Private Carroll "Cal" Stewart, who later co-authored a book about the Ploesti raid, "Ploesti: The Great Ground-Air Battle of 1 August 1943."
